Vietnam’s Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính recently visited the Blykalla labs at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, during which he called on Swedish partners to work with Vietnam to build safe, modern nuclear energy solutions.

Blykalla, part of the Earth Venture Capital portfolio, is one of the world’s most advanced nuclear tech startups: clean, cost-effective, safe, fuel-independent, and capable of early deployment.

A Strategic Energy Chapter for Vietnam

Vietnam currently relies heavily on coal, which provided 56.9% of its electricity production in the first half of 2024. With Vietnam's pledge to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, the visit signals a strategic step toward reviving the country's peaceful nuclear roadmap.

This next-generation reactor aligns with Vietnam’s vision for diversified, secure, and climate-friendly power supply. Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính emphasized the country’s plan to revive its peaceful nuclear roadmap, highlighting the need for clear regulatory frameworks, human capital development, and robust safety protocols – all areas where Sweden’s deep expertise could be a powerful partner.

His visit also laid the foundation for a broader strategic partnership between Vietnam and Sweden in science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation, with nuclear energy as a key pillar.

Sweden, an early pioneer in civilian nuclear power, once operated 12 reactors supplying over half its electricity in the 1980s. Today, nuclear power still provides nearly 40% of Sweden’s power, and the country is pushing to modernize and expand its fleet to meet climate goals.

Why This Matters

We believed in Blykalla from day one: their lead-cooled Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) deliver clean, safe, and scalable energy, exactly what Vietnam needs to fuel growth without fueling emissions.

“We’re committed not just to funding climate deeptech, but to connecting these innovations with the Global South, and helping Vietnam leapfrog into the next generation of energy infrastructure,” - Tien Nguyen
